BalkanBalkan

Balkan invests in negotiable securities, mainly equities and equity-related securities listed on different official stock exchanges, primarily in the Balkans. The economic growth in the region is still in an initial phase and has thus great potential.

The countries are characterised by high economic growth rates, an increasing standard of living and high productivity, but they remain financially far behind the rest of Europe. Therefore, we expect the convergence process - in which the countries are catching up financially with Western Europe - to last yet another 40 years.

Danske Capital believes in convergence-driven investment opportunities which imply positive excess returns in the Eastern European markets relative to the Western European markets. Still, we believe the stock selection process is the ultimate determinant of strong performance within the asset class. Therefore, we have created a structured investment process in which we identify companies that are capable of benefitting from the top-down convergence and the important trends it creates for companies in the Eastern European region.

We believe that the four most important convergence-based structural trends across Eastern Europe are:

  • Increasing wages and prices,
  • Strong market growth,
  • More competition,
  • Efficiency improvements.
